The Fort's History | (foto:
the fort)The village of Tiracol is situated on the northern
point of Goa, 42 kms from Panjim on the right margin of the River
Arondem. Before the Portuguese conquered this enclave it was part of the
Bhounsolos, a hindu-dynasty north of Goa. Though just occupying 2 square mile it had a strategic importance to control the river access and to collect taxes from the incoming ships. In the 16th century the Bhounsolos constructed the original fort, but it is possible that this place had a fortification long before that. The Portuguese conquered it under the command of the Governor Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida, Marquis of Alorna, on 23rd November of the year 1746. In the same year he ordered a Chapel to be constructed in its interiour, dedicating it to Holy Trinity. Following the political instability in Portugal with the fall of the absolutist regime and the Liberal revolution, the first time in Goan History a Goan Governor was appointed by Lisbon, Governador Bernardo Peres da Silva, who had many of his supporters in the Tiracol Fort. However the absolutist regained power and the fort witnessed a bloody massacre when troops attacked it to eliminate all his supporters. After Indian Independence this fort was an important place for non-violent Freedom Fighters to campaign against the Portuguese regime, invading the fort for some hours. |
About Goa | (foto:
Anjuna beach)Goa
is a small state of India on its western coast with an area of 3800 km2
and a population of 1,2 million people of which 35% are Christians, 60%
Hindus and 5% Muslims, creating a harmonious society with great
religious tolerance and harmony. It is an ideal holiday spot
due to its combination of fantastic beaches, historical monuments and
unique culture. Goans are a very friendly people and widely influenced by more than four centuries of Portuguese rule. Today Goans are far more literate than the rest of Indians and have a more western mentality which also gives them a separate identity. Proud of their culture and heritage they give much importance to their History. After Vasco da Gama arrived on this coast in 1498, being the first European to find the maritime way to India, much changed in these territories. Usually a region that was disputed between Muslims and Hindus, the Portuguese rapidly conquered it and founded the City of Goa (today Old Goa). Due to its commercial importance it grew to one of the biggest cities in the world in the 16th century with more than 300 000 inhabitants from all over the world, including Portuguese, Indians, German, Spaniards, Dutch, Croatians etc. But after the decadence of the commercial monopoly of the Portuguese and continuos pests in the city, Old Goa was abandened and a new capital was founded (Panjim). Today you can visit Old Goa (a World Heritage Center) with its fantastic churches and convents and other enormous monuments. Along the coast there are other vestiges of the Portuguese presence. The many forts are normally on hilltops or on capes and are beautiful places to observe the sunset. Goa's beaches are worldwide known for their warm water and their calm atmosphere surrounded by palm trees. Visit Goa and you will live a unique life experience. |
